Tangy Berry Bowl

When I was younger I used to be utterly obsessed with sour candy - I can clearly remember our neighbourhood gang biking down to the local shops specifically to buy bags of glittery, sugar-crusted lollies. We would hang upside-down on the monkey bars with rainbow strips hanging from our mouths, and rustle through the paper bags to find the chewy gummy cola bottles first. Looking back on this, I am appalled to think how much sugar we would have consumed, not to mention all the gelatine and colourings... yikes.

This smoothie bowl is my homage to all things tangy and delicious - a really light and bright pink berry smoothie topped with sour kiwifruit and raspberry pieces. There's all sorts of goodies hiding in this puddle of deliciousness, including acai powder and black bean powder, but you can add and omit these ingredients as you see fit. It's simply a guideline, but if you're like me and are looking for something to make your mouth pucker, then only add the most sour fruits you can possibly find! I highly recommend using frozen fruits for a thicker, smoothie bowl type consistency, but then again, that's just me. Also, please don't skimp out on soaking the chia seeds - if they don't absorb the water now, they'll do it later in your intestines and make your digestive processes less efficient! Pesky lil things.


1 tablespoon of chia seeds
2-3 tablespoons of water

1 banana
6 strawberries
1/2 cup of raspberries
1 teaspoon of acai powder
1 teaspoon of black bean powder
1/4 cup of water

1 kiwifruit, diced or crushed
1/4 cup of raspberries
A sprinkle of acai powder


  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the chia seeds and water, then set aside to thicken.
  2. In a food processor or blender, add the banana, strawberries, raspberries, acai powder, and black bean powder. Pulse until they're roughly combined, then run the blender continuously while your pour the water in slowly. You should be left with a thick but smooth consistency. Pour this mixture into a serving bowl.
  3. Top the smoothie bowl with the kiwifruit, raspberries, and the soaked chia pudding. Sprinkle with acai powder and serve immediately!
